Professional artist Andy Golub enjoys talking with people
at galleries about his abstract paintings.
Some of his work is done on metal objects, such as trash cans,
car doors and carburetors. The 39-year-old Nyack resident said
that an arts festival planned at Haverstraw Bay Park next
month was just the place to exhibit it.
"It's a great way to
bring artists together," Golub said. "More importantly,
for me at least, it will give me a chance to have a dialogue
with the public. Haverstraw in many ways is the most
vibrant part of the county right now, being that it's
in transition. My style is definitely unique. And I feel
like if there is any place that would embrace my artwork,
it would be a place like Haverstraw."
Artist exhibitions, live entertainment and creative workshops
are planned for the first Hudson River Festival of the Arts
on July 30. The Arts Alliance of Haverstraw and Rockland are
sponsoring the free festival to showcase artists from Rockland,
Westchester, Putnam and the Hudson Valley region, said Jessica
Otero, executive director of the Arts Alliance.
About a dozen artists have agreed to feature and sell their
work at the festival. The Arts Alliance still seeks more artists,
artisans and other performers to fill the park, Otero said.
"We're trying to attract visual artists, sculptors, painters and craftspeople," Otero
said. "It's a festival celebrating all forms of arts."
The festival will have children's performances, circus acts,
craft vendors, puppet shows from the Arms-of-the-Sea Theater
and the Hudson Vagabond Puppets, inflatable rides, music, dancing,
storytellers, food and community information booths. ReMax
Realty will offer hot-air balloon rides throughout the day.
The Arts Alliance's Arts Ablaze program will have workshops
at the festival. Arts Ablaze offers programs to school-age
children in music, dance and the visual arts, said Nina Powell,
program coordinator for the Arts Alliance.
"That will basically show off the programs we have here," Powell said.
Rock, pop and jazz music will be performed on two stages.
Clowns will walk around the park painting faces and making
animal balloons.
Artist Paul Tappenden, 58, of South Nyack
said his success at the fifth annual GAGA Arts Festival at
the Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center this month pushed
him to do the coming Arts Alliance festival. Tappenden said
he looked forward to exhibiting his abstract paintings and
murals at the riverfront park.
"I only sell out of my studio or galleries, so this is going to be a little different," Tappenden
said. "It's a beautiful location. It's a wonderful place to have an outdoor
festival."
